Bahamas Wahoo Challege a success in West End
WEST END, GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND – Twenty-two boats competed in the second leg of the recent Yellowfin Bahamas Wahoo Challenge hosted last week at Old Bahama Bay Resort and Yacht Harbour. After two days of competition, the team on “Shock Wave” out of Miami, Florida, emerged victorious. Hoisting in a 95.5 pound Wahoo on the first day of competition, “Shock Wave” led the field with a first-day total weight of 249 pounds for five fish. The second day saw another slew of big fish weighed when the team on “Wake Up Call” reeled in an 89.5 pound giant. “Wake Up Call” proved to be the story of the day, starting in 10th place and moving to 2nd place overall with their spectacular second-day performance. In the end, “Shock Wave” maintained 1st place with 273 pounds. “Wake Up Call” took 2nd place with 227.5 pounds. “Fly-n-Loe” took 3rd place with 212 pounds. The largest fish was “Shock Wave’s” 95.5 pounder; “Wake Up Call’s” 89.5 pounds fish was 2nd; and “Predator” had the 3rd largest fish at 62 pounds. The Bahamian team, Predator, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished fourth overall in the competition by just 5 pounds. “Shock Wave”, comprised of five fishing buddies, walked away with a total cash prize of $49,000. The series title went to “Savanna Lynn” with a 1st place finish in Bimini and a 6th place finish in West End. The first leg of the tournament had taken place in Bimini in November. Event organizer, Anthony Albelo, expressed his satisfaction with the waters of Grand Bahama which he said are often overlooked. “In the guidelines, we restricted fishing to waters right off of Grand Bahama and the fishermen were not disappointed. The yields were phenomenal.” Already excited about next year’s tournament, organizers promise that the 2007/2008 season will have a third leg PLUS a surprise twist that will make everyone in the fishing world stand up and notice The Bahamas Wahoo Challenge. Along with the fishing, anglers were able to unwind with friends and families and enjoy luxurious amenities at Old Bahama Bay, resort venue for this year’s second leg. Scheduled events included a Captain’s Kickoff Party, daily cocktail parties during the weigh-ins and a final Awards Dinner complete with a grand Bahamian buffet and live entertainment. As the year continues, Old Bahama Bay will host the first-ever “Bahama Mama - Ladies Only Fishing Tournament”, May 10th – 13th during the Mother’s Day weekend. Although male counterparts will be allowed on the boats, only ladies can compete and weigh fish for prizes. Then, July 26th – 29th marks The Bahamas Swordfish Championship, pitting some of the best big-game fishing teams against one another as they compete in night-time competition. Old Bahama Bay features 49 luxury ocean guest rooms and suites with 24 more opening in a few months, a 72 slip port of entry marina, and a waterfront residential community. In early January, Ginn Resorts assumed operations of the Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour. Ginn Resorts is currently developing Ginn Sur Mer, a 2,000 acre resort community adjacent to Old Bahama Bay that will contain more than 4,400 condominium and hotel units, nearly 2,000 single family residential home sites, signature golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, clubhouses, two large marinas, a private airport, a Monte Carlo style casino, water and swim pavilions, a beach club and a spa. The $4.9 billion Sur Mer development will serve as Ginn Resort’s flagship Caribbean development. Caption:
